1. Take a visa photo
ChinaStar offers photo services for visa, passport or travel document. Sign up a photo service and email photo@chinastar.us to make a photo appointment.
2. Fill a COVA form – do it yourself or hire a visa agency
Apply an account on the Chinese Online Visa Application – COVA system. The COVA form is very long and confusing. If you submit a COVA form yourself, the Chinese Embassy may reject your application due to incorrect or missing information.

3. Upload supporting documents to COVA:
Upload the following supporting documents to COVA:
- Visa photo
- Passport
- Drive license or a utility bill for a proof of residence.
- Visa statement form (download it here).
- Previous visa and previous passport if your previous visa is on a previous passport. If you have multiple previous visas, provide the latest one.
- Birth certificate or naturalization certificate if applying for the first time.
- Chinese passport if apply for the first time by a previous Chinese citizen.
- For a child born overseas with one or both parents having a Chinese heritage, and the child applies for a visa for the first time, include the child birth certificate, both parents’ passports, and their green cards (or naturalization certificates).
- For a family visit visa (Q2), include (a) an invitation letter and (b) photos of the invitee’s Chinese National ID (front and back).
- If you would like to apply a Q1 visa, in addition to 9), include a proof of a family relationship (i.e, marriage certificate, birth certificate, 户口本) between inviter and invitee.
- For a business visit visa (M or F), include an business invitation letter.
- Legal name change document if there is a name change.
- If you are a non-US citizen, include a proof of legal status such as a US green card or a US visa.
Each applicant must provide the above 1) – 4) documents. 9) is only needed for a family visit visa. 11) is needed for a business visa. Tourist L visa does not need 8) or 9).
If you have chosen to complete the COVA form yourself and your COVA has been pre-approved, you can contact ChinaStar to send your passport to the Chinese Embassy – the embassy does not accept mailing.
